2011 Shenzhen Unversiade

Summary

The World University Games (WUGs), also known as the Summer Universiade, is held every two years under the auspices of FISU, the International University Sports Federation. The WUGs are second in size only to the Olympics, so it is often nicknamed “Small Olympics”. They comprise of thirteen compulsory sports and up to eight optional sports (which are determined by the relevant host country). The WUGs are staged in various cities throughout the world. The event was first officially held in 1959 and the 26th World University Games will be held in Shenzhen from August 12 to August 20, 2011.

Because the Unisersiade is the second largest international multi-sport event only second to Olympic Games in terms of scale of operation, countries across the world take it seriously and send their most outstanding athletes to participate in the competition since the first event in 1959. University athletes have altogether broken 18 records in track and field and swimming competition in all previous World University Games since its first opening.

The mascot

The mascot of 2011 World University Games, “UU”, is actually a smiling face transformed from the emblem of Shenzhen 2011 Universiade “Happy U”. And meantime it has the shape of the initial letter U from the word “university” and symbolizes the open, friendly and tolerant spirit of the Universiade.

The emblem-Happy U

The emblem of Shenzhen 2011 Universiade “Happy U” consists of numerous mlti-colored circles of varying sizes, each serving as a necessary element of the emblem and can bear a lot of messages and imaginations. It is an open emblem with no fixed meanings.

The Happy U can be understood as the abbreviation for University, You, Union, United or Universe, as well as the sea bay (Dapeng Bay) in Shenzhen. University students with different skin colors from five continents across the globe will gather together at the U-shaped Dapeng Bay. And the shape of U also symbolizes open, friendly and tolerant spirit.

These dots can enlarge, shrink, accumulate and change freely, and they can evolve into different things and change into each kind of solid graphs which can be used at various situations at the Universiade. These dots in the artistic design process can have six aspects of meaning: Happy U, Open U, Tolerate U, Young U, World U and Future U.

The whole happy U comprises a great number of dots of five colors, red, green, yellow, blue and black, which are arranged freely within the U shape. The black word “Universiade” stands for the English version of World University Games, and the following “SHENZHEN 2011” stands for the host city Shenzhen and the year of the 26th Universiade-2011. The five stars below symbolize International University Sports Federation.

Sports Events

This Sports Games will be the biggest event with the most competition items and the largest participants of all Unisersiades. There will be 24 sports competitions including the track and field, swimming, water polo, diving, beach football, bicycle, Tae Kwon Do, chess, soccer, weight lifting, fencing, ping pong, sailing and wind surfboard, tennis, golf, badminton, archery, Judo, body-building exercise, volleyball, basketball and athletics gymnastics and artistic aerobatics. The number of participant athletes, coaches and team leaders is expected to reach over 10,000.

Venues

Construction of the Universiade facilities has been progressing smoothly. Sixty-three venues will be prepared for training and competition. Of the 63 stadiums and gymnasiums, 22 are newly built, 36 renovated or upgraded, and five temporary venues that will be dismantles after the Games. There will be six new non-competition venues. Some sites will be used after the Games. For example, the Universiade Village will be converted into student dormitories for Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology after the Games.

Universiade Center Gymnasium

Universiade Center Gymnasium is the main venue for the 26th World University Games. The main venue will undertake the opening ceremony, closing ceremony, track and field competition and basketball games, and it also functions as a 3,000-seat natatorium. Around the Universiade Center Gymnasium, a well-equipped athlete village will be built to provide a convenient and comfortable environment for the athletes.

Shenzhen Sports Center

Shenzhen Sports Center was constructed by the venture of Shenzhen municipal government in 1985. It is one of the highly modernized sports centers. Besides the main competition hall there are also some training centers for ball games and gymnastics, used for the training and warm-up exercises of athletes.  

New Sports Center

The university student sports center is located in Longgang District, and mainly consists of the university student sport center (including main stadium, main gymnasium and natatorium), forest park, reservoir and residential areas.

Shenzhen Gymnasium

During the Games the gymnasium will hold basketball, volleyball, ping pong, gymnastics sports competitions.

Shenzhen Swimming and Diving Natatorium

The main hall is equipped with 50m ×25m standard competition pool and 25m×25m×5.5m standard diving pool and 25m×2lm training pool as well as land training area. And it is well-equipped with all kinds of competition and monitoring devices. It is able to undertake sports competitions such as swimming, diving, water ballet, and water polo.

Shenzhen Sports Training Center

Shenzhen Sports Training Center is a comprehensive training gymnasium. The three-floor main building is designed to serve as a center for holding official athletic competitions, artistic aerobatics training and other games. It comprises two fields for gymnastics and artistic gymnasium competition, one field for handball game, one venue for basketball game, three fields for volleyball game, nine fields for badminton game and twelve fields for ping pong game on the first floor, and one field for skill game, one field for Tae Kwon Do, one field for Judo, two fields for martial arts, one field for Chinese style wrestling and one field for classical, unrestricted wrestling on the second floor, and one male gymnastics training field and one female gymnastics training field on the third floor.

The male gymnastics training field consists of two horizontal bar fields, two parallel bars fields, two hand ring fields, two pommel horse fields, two horse-vaulting fields and one floor exercise field; the female gymnastics training field consists of two horse-vaulting fields, three uneven bars fields, four balance beam fields and one floor exercise field.

Longgang International Bicycle Race Course

Longgang International Bicycle Race Course was constructed from March, 2001 to October, 2001 by the venture of People's Government of Guangdong Province. It comprises three parts, a main venue, a 13.5 km surrounding reservoir racing track and a 6.8 km mountain racing track. It once served as the bicycle race course for the Ninth National Games of China and is now the first standard international racing track in Asia which can hold track race, road race and mountain race at the same time.

Luohu Gymnasium

Luohu Gymnasium is a seven-floor building, three underground and four up ground. It is a comprehensive sports center, including a main hall, a training hall and a swimming hall as well as ancillary buildings, clubs, car parks and other facilities. The 3000-seat main hall can hold various competitions like basketball, volleyball, badminton, pingpong, Tae Kwon Do, martial arts, gymnastics and so on.

Bao’an Gymnasium

As the second largest gymnasium in Guangdong Province, Baoan Gymnasium is currently the largest one in Shenzhen. It can not only hold different kinds of sports games like basketball, volleyball, pingpong and gymnastics, but also serve as a perfect field for theatrical performances, large meetings and fairs and exhibitions.

Nanshan District Culture and Sports Center

Nanshan District Culture and Sports Center will hold basketball games, pingpong games, volleyball games and gymnastics.

Xili Sports Center

Xili Sports Center with a total indoor stadium project area of 9,000 square meter consists of a 1850-square-meter badminton hall, a 1,600-square-meter pingping hall, a 800-square-meter gym, a kickboxing hall, a Tae Kwon Do hall, a ballroom and a young people activity center and a comprehensive hall.

Shenzhen University Gymnasium

During the Games, Shenzhen University Gymnasium will hold track and field competition.
