On 1 Sept., Han Changfu, Minister of Agriculture, met with Christopher Bond and Claire McCaskill, United States Senators from Missouri, who visited China at the invitation of the Chinese People s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries. The two sides exchanged views on the matters concerning stronger bilateral agricultural cooperation.

Han said that the Chinese side attached importance to the agricultural cooperation with Missouri since it was a major agricultural producer in the United States with developed crop and animal production and highly competitive agricultural products. Senator Bond and McCaskill had long been committed to promoting agricultural cooperation and economic and trade exchanges and collaboration between China and the United States, which served the common interests of the two countries.

Senator Bond and McCaskill said that Missouri valued the economic and trade relations with China. They opposed the barriers to the bilateral agricultural trade set by some United States senators and would further enhance the agricultural cooperation and trade with China.

Han noted that the two sides could intensify the collaboration on agricultural scientific and technological exchange and personnel training, and conduct communication activities on agricultural ecosystems, integrated utilization of agricultural byproducts and some other aspects. He hoped Senator Bond and McCaskill could help to resolve the issue of restricted export of some agricultural products including poultry meat and honey from China to the United States and facilitate the sound and sustained development of the bilateral agricultural trade.

Chen Mengshan, Chief Economist of the Ministry of Agriculture, and officials from the departments and bureaus concerned also attended the meeting.
