China s First Tour DMU for Beijing Olympics Rolled off the Production Line

China s first tour DMU Harmony specially built for Beijing Olympic Games, has rolled off the production line recently. The train, full of the wisdom, hard working and blessing of staffs from China South Locomotive and Rolling Stock Corporation Limited CSR, is completed and delivered to Beijing. After the track test, this DMU will be operated between Beijing and Badaling during the Olympics, and when it comes, it will show China s another new achievement of independent innovation to the world.

It is one of the Olympic auxiliary projects to make use of the existing railway between Beijing and Badaling to run the DMU. After the DMU is put into use, it will only take about one hour and twenty minutes to finish the whole journey, almost half of the previously-taken time; at the same time, the combination of the ancient Great Wall and the new multiple units will be a unique new view for the tourists who visit the Great Wall during the Olympics.

It is reported that Harmony , the tour DMU Harmony for the Olympics, is jointly built by CSR Nanjing Puzhen Rolling Stock CO., Ltd. and CRS Qishuyan Locomotive CO., Ltd. The DMU is different from the CRH2 high-speed EMU named Harmony , which was also built by CSR and has been put into use. It has two motor cars and seven trailers, hauling by two diesel locomotives in tandem, with a design speed of 160km/h and passenger capacity of 446; suitable for suburban railway and tour line.

As the journalist saw, with the streamline designed head and the whole white body adorned with blue belt, it has a similar appearance with the existing EMU Harmony . On the whole, the DMU highlights two themes Olympics and tourism . With its wide view windows , wide opening doors and rotary seats, it is designed to meet the tourists need of enjoying the scenery during the journey.

In the carriages, a series of obstacle-free pass designs were adopted in line with European standards. What s more, areas for the disabled to put wheelchairs as well as toilets for the disabled were set, making the whole design more humanized.

It is introduced that the railway between Beijing and Badaling Great Wall is one of the most difficult section of Jing-Zhang Railway construction which was designed and built by the famous railway designer Zhan Tianyou. With the nation s highest track gradient long steep grade 35.8 and minimum radius of curve R180m, it has the name of China s First Railway Gradient . The requirement for train s traction and brake of this section is much more demanding than that of other tracks, requiring high-power traction for upgrading and long-distance brake for downgrading.

In order to meet the service requirement of the tour line between Beijing and Badaling, modularization and integration design was adopted in the design of the train. The locomotive was developed by CRS Qishuyan Locomotive CO., Ltd. On the basis of NYJ1 sub-high-speed multiple units, in light of the high track gradient and minor curve radius and the low limiting speed of Jing-Ba Line, the company improved the design, and adopted some advanced technology, such as off-line remote indication double locomotive control as well as communication and microcomputer control, etc.

The trailers were built by CSR Nanjing Puzhen Rolling Stock CO., Ltd, and its seven trailers include three first-class cars, three second-class cars and one taproom car. These trailers are monolayer, making use of lots of manufacture concepts for high-speed multiple units, advanced technologies and major components for high-speed motor train set.

Through close cooperation with the suppliers, the company developed a new type of top-grade passenger coach of complete independent innovation, and it is a new achievement of the company s introduction and absorption as well as digestion of the advanced international manufacture technologies.

It is reported that the four DMU Harmony for the Jing-Ba line have all rolled offthe production line recently. Motivated by the spirit of producing high quality products to serve the Olympics, CSR Nanjing Puzhen and CRS Qishuyan managed to deliver the complete vehicle on schedule through their more than three-month s hard work, offering a great present for the Olympic Games.

Supplemental information of the test: from July 12th to July 19th, the Harmonious motor train set for tour during the Olympics has successfully passed the tests on Beijing Annular track, Jing-Bao Line and Jing-Ha Line. And the tests include comprehensive performance tests such as tests of the dynamics of locomotives and trailers of the motor train set, starting acceleration of traction performance, ramp starting, inertia resistance, static braking, emergency braking and ramp parking of braking performance, and running time, etc. All the test results are in line with the requirements of the technical specifications in the public biding and related standards. Especially in the operation test between Beijing and Badaling section, it showed excellent dynamic performance, high quality traction and brake control performance with an index of operation safety far lower than the standard limit value.
