Four renowned scientists and engineers home and abroad gave academic presentations in the auditorium of BeijingConferenceCenter, June 7, 2010.

First of all, Prof. Nilsson, President of Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA), gave a presentation entitled Pharmaceutical & Biotechnology Industry into the next 20 years . He analyzed the challenges and opportunities for the pharmaceutical industry, and discussed the idea of Personalized Medicine . His opinion is that current science and technology has made it possible to develop Personalized Medicine characterized by connecting treatment with diagnostics. Then he presented examples of personalized medicine to support his opinion. Finally, he introduced the life science industry in Sweden, and discusses the opportunities of China s pharmaceutical industry.

The second speaker was Prof. Du Xiangwan, Vice President of CAE, who gave a presentation on behalf of the Study Group of Energy Development Strategy Project named An Exploration of China s Green, and Low Carbon Energy Development Strategy . The presentation is a comprehensive report of CAE s consulting project named China s Medium-and-Long Term (2030, 2050) Development Strategy for Energy . It includes the following sections: status and challenges of energy; the guiding thoughts and principles of China s medium-and-long term development strategy for energy; strategic position of China s energy development at different stages before 2050; a scientific, green, and low carbon energy strategy is a win-win one for economy and environment, and an important part of national strategy for addressing climate change; a scientific, green, and low carbon energy strategy requires potent support of science and technology; an energy strategy like this will not only generate new points for economic growth, but also facilitate scientific and technological innovation, and help to command new strategic heights; energy development prospects for the first half of 21st century; some key suggestions to the implementation of a scientific, green, and low carbon energy development strategy.

Then Prof. Raj Reddy, who works with Carnegie Mellon University, USA, and is a Foreign Member of CAE, spoke upon Providing Global Leadership in Software Engineering . In his presentation, Prof. Reddy analyzed the problems in software engineering, thinking that it should become a serious engineering discipline, and introduce the methodology of typical engineering projects. He holds that an integrated online handbook and prototyping system for software engineering should be created, and education and training programs should be established, jointly with other methods. He believes that the ChineseAcademy of Engineering is uniquely qualified to provide leadership in software engineering.

Last but not least, Prof. Surendra Shah from Northwestern University, USA, also a Foreign Member of CAE, talked about Controlling properties of concrete through nanotechnology In his presentation, Prof. Shah introduced the application of nanotechnology in developing high strength and high performance concrete, discussed in details about related mechanism, experiment, and results, including the role of carbon nanotube. He also examined the prospects for the improved performance of concrete through nanotechnology.

Besides, academic workshops and seminars on medium and long-term development strategy of engineering science and technology in China, as well as academician team development, among many other topics, were organized by the Academy and all Academic Divisions.
