Prof. Seeram Ramakrishna, Vice President of National University of Singapore, Visited Chinese Academy of Engineering

Prof. Seeram Ramakrishna, Vice President of National University of Singapore whose main responsibilities lie in scientific research planning, visited the Chinese Academy of Engineering on November 23, 2010. CAE Member Du Xiangwan met with the guest. Mr. Du gave a briefing about the basic situation of CAE, and introduced in great length the current status of nuclear power plants construction in China, the safety and efficiency concern of high temperature reaction technology, the economy concern of scale production as well as the cleanness and efficiency concern of nuclear energy power generation.

Vice President Seeram Ramakrishna in-troduced to Du the energy resource structure in Singapore, potential challenges it would possibly face, as well as what he s been engaged in right now -- the future energy structure and human resources planning. Prof. Seeram Ramakrishna said that about 80% of Singapore's energy comes from natural gas. Also, currently, Singapore is interested in the nuclear energy in China, and is conducting feasibility investigation and study of the localization and application of clean and low-carbon energy forms, such as nuclear power.

Both sides also exchanged viewpoints extensively regarding thermal utilization of solar power, solar energy power generation, solar power and energy-efficient architecture, early stage of nuclear energy exploitation preparation including infrastructure and human resource aspects, as well as the price difference between solar energy power generation and other forms of energy power generation. Both sides extended their willingness to carry out academic exchanges and cooperation in the fields of engineering education and scientific research in the future. In addition, Prof. Seeram Ramakrishna suggested that an international conference focused on innovation, or network electromagnetic space security, or nuclear energy be organized jointly by both sides in the third quarter of 2011.
