Premier Wen visits elderly scientists in Beijing (Xinhua)

BEIJING Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday personally conveyed National Day greetings to elderly scientists who have made prominent contributions to atomic and medical research.

China's National Day this year will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of modern China.

Premier Wen first visited Zhu Guangya, a nuclear physicist and one of the key scientists engaged in producing the first of China's atomic and hydrogen bombs between the 1950s and 1960s.

"You have devoted your whole life to the development of the country and service to the people. We will remember you with concern forever," Wen told 85-year-old Zhu.

"Your loyalty and unselfish dedication to the country and people will encourage younger generations and their descendants forever," Wen told Zhu, a winner of the prestigious Achievement Medal for his work on nuclear weaponry and also satellites.

Wen had worked closely with the scientist for five years when Zhu was president of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and China Association for Science and Technology.

Zhu told Premier Wen that China should take the opportunity provided by the global economic downturn to bring the country on to a track of innovation-oriented development, and also that the government should establish firmer regulations to prevent academic cheating.

Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has paid home visits to three senior scientists and an author who played important roles in China's scientific development and literature cause.

Zhu Guangya, the 83-year-old famous physicist, received the Premier at home on Friday afternoon.

Zhu had been one of the leading scientists who took part in developing China's first A-bomb, H-bomb and satellite in the 1960s and 1970s.

"The Chinese People's Liberation Army has just celebrated its 80th founding anniversary. Although you did not attend the conference the Party held to mark the achievements, including the A-bomb, H-bomb and satellite, everybody keeps you in mind. We all remember the great contribution you have made to the projects," Wen said.

The old man shook hands with the Premier with tears in his eyes and handed in proposals on how to coordinate development of military and civilian technologies and to set up a human resources framework encouraging creativity.

When the premier visited the house of Qian Xuesen, the 96-year-old renowned scientist and founder of China's space technology told the Premier his opinions on training more young talents and on combining science with literature and art in education.

"Proper handling of relationship between science and literature and art will help students in school of science improve creativity, " Qian said.

The Premier has also visited He Zehui, renowned nuclear physicist and wife of late physicist Qian Sanqiang, known as Father of China's A-bomb, as well as Ji Xianlin, a well-known Chinese author and translator.

Asteroid named for Zhu

An asteroid discovered by a Chinese observatory has been named after Zhu Guangya, a leading scientist in China's nuclear programme. The asteroid bears the international code No 10388.

Premier Wen Jiabao attended a ceremony and workshop yesterday, at which Zhu accepted a certificate from Lu Yongxiang, president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

President Hu Jintao visited two well-known scientists during a day used to mark scientific endeavor.

Nuclear physicist Zhu Guangya and mathematician Yang Le, welcomed Hu at their homes in Beijing on Friday afternoon.

Hu heard their opinions and suggestions on the country's development of science and technology, and extended New Year's greetings to them and science workers throughout the country.
