Construction of a road bridge linking northeast China's Fuyuan county in Heilongjiang Province with Heixiazi Island on the China-Russia border started Tuesday, said Zhang Jiayang, the project manager Wednesday.

Zhang said the two-way, four-lane road bridge would be 6.4 km long, and could carry traffic traveling at up to 80 km per hour.

Completion of the bridge is scheduled for October 2012, Zhang said.

Heixiazi Island is at the confluence of the Heilong and the Wusuli rivers on China's border with Russia's far east.

On Oct. 14, 2008, China and Russia unveiled the boundary markers for the eastern section of China-Russia border.

It was agreed that half of Heixiazi Island close to Fuyuan county belonged to China.

The county government is considering proposals to turn the island into a tourist destination and a free trade zone, but no plans have been confirmed.
