More than 8,000 smugglers commute in-between the customs in Shenzhen and Gongbei of Guangdong Province and Hong Kong and Macao Xinhua reported Wednesday, citing an official from the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC).
GACC launched a campaign against smuggling in Shenzhen and Gongbei customs in the middle of September. The ministry detected 939 cases in the first month of the campaign, in which goods worth 49.88 million yuan ($7.48 million)) and 5.01 million yuan ($751,462) in taxes involved.
GACC estimates that over 8,000 smugglers from Hong Kong and Macao, among hundreds of thousands of travelers enter the Shenzhen and Gongbei customs, from three to more than 50 times a day.
Those smugglers are well organized - goods collected and dispatched to members outside Chinesecustoms, taking goods through the customs like "ant-moving", and reassembling them for sale, Xinhua reported. Some even pay travelers unawaring of the truth to take smuggled goods, cited the report.
GACC said that the goods smuggled are mainly high-tech products small in size and expensive products in short supply.
