SHENZHEN Hi-Tech Industrial Park (SHIP) took the lead among domestic industrial parks in the number of international patent applications last year.

SHIP applied for 12,158 patents last year, more than 24 percent of the total number in Shenzhen, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

There were 8,947 invention patent applications by SHIP last year, more than 37 percent of the city s total.

With a planned area of 11.5 square kilometers, SHIP has become a cluster of competent innovative high-tech enterprises, including 70 companies listed overseas and 230 companies each with an output value of more than 100 million yuan (US$15 million), the paper said.

Tencent Inc. in SHIP had applied for 3,358 patents by the end of last year, matching the patent numbers of Internet giants such as Google.

More than 99 percent of Tencent s patents were for inventions.

There is still big potential in SHIP s independent innovation with a constant increase in patent numbers by small-and-medium enterprises, the paper quoted an SHIP official as saying.

In addition, the SHIP management body had stepped up efforts to introduce research and development institutes, patent service organizations and venture capital investment bodies.

SHIP has 83 key national laboratories, five national engineering laboratories, eight national enterprise technological centers and a virtual university park consisting of 53 universities from home and abroad.

Three professional patent service institutes have set up offices in SHIP. (Li Hao)
