Sano, Tochigi Prefecture,with an area of 84.37 km? and a population of 85,000 people, lies about 70 km north of Tokyo. Sano City has a humid climate, with four seasons. The average temperature is 15.1 , while the average humidity is 66.3%. This is an artistic city with beautiful natural landscape. It is known as a city of beautiful scenery with varieties of plants . Sano was built on April 1, 1943, from 3 towns and 3 villages. In December 1964, the city was designated as the development zone of the satellite city of the Japanese capital. This was taken as an opportunity to implement a large-scale urban construction. In the eastern part is the 110-hectare industrial zone where 35 factories have been put into production. Another industrial zone with an area of 126 hectares will be developed in the western part. In the 21st century, the city s developing plan will include large projects of a new urban district and an industrial zone in Haneda. There are 1184 factories with an employment of 15542. In the city, major industries are precision instruments, chemical industry, plastics, pulp and paper, electronics, fibers, rubber, clothing, foodstuff, etc. In the future the city will comply with the "new city planning" to the sophisticated technology and scientific research and development-based industries in the lead, and to take full advantage of the beautiful natural environment and favorable conditions for building an unique, dynamic central city full of personality and charm in the south-western part of Tochigi Prefecture.

Sano s agriculture relies mainly on planting rice with rich products especially local ones including noodles, pears, peaches, strawberries. And noodles are famous at home and abroad. In 1990, agricultural gross output reaches up to 7.236 billion yen. The business sales of 1991 are 237.87 billion yen.

There are 9 kindergartens with 1,830 children and 92 teachers, 13 primary schools with 6,271 pupils and 276 teachers, 7 junior high schools with 3,660 students and 218 teachers 5 senior high schools with 6,367 students and 367 teachers, one short-term university with 627 students and 49 teachers.

Sano has convenient traffic. Northeast Expressway, State Road 50, and State Road 293 run through the territory. It s only 70 km away from Tokyo, with 50 minutes drive. North-east of North Kantou Expressway is planned to run through the north part of the city, when the city will become the gateway of North Kantou area. The possession of motor vehicles is 51392, of which 28947 were cars.

The city has one of the most famous springs. And standing at the peak of the hill in the city, you can get a panoramic view of the city, and can also look to Mt. Fuji and the skyscraper in Tokyo.
