Bangkok to see more police checkpoints

More police checkpoints will be set up in Bangkok and maximum security at embassies will be imposed following a warning by Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont that more explosives could be set off in the coming months, the Thai News Agency reported Saturday.

Bangkok Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Pol. Maj. Gen. Kamol Kaewsuwan has asked to double the number of security checkpoints from the current 42, to be manned by police, military personnel and volunteers round-the-clock, said the report.

Maximum security will be in force at embassies, together with as many as 300 shopping malls, entertainment venues and ports, a senior police officer was quoted as saying.

Bangkok police will also ask for help from the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology for more efficient monitoring and tracing of telephone calls relating to bomb threats and other security incidents which have been creating confusion since last Sunday bombings in Bangkok, which left three persons killed and 42 others wounded, including nine foreigners.
