Almost 120 soldiers from Cracow and Zagan of southern Poland left for Afghanistan on Thursday for a six-month mission, Polish media reported.

The soldiers are to be stationed in the Ghazni and Paktika provinces.

Polish Defense Ministry Secretary of State Marek Zajakala told reporters that the main task of the soldiers was to "back operations aimed at stabilizing the situation in Afghanistan."

They will chiefly combat terrorism but also extendi help in the reconstruction of the country, especially the agricultural sector, Polish PAP news agency quoted Zajakala as saying.

Land forces commander, general Waldemar Skrzypczak, said that Polish soldiers will be stationed in the north-eastern part of Afghanistan. The level of threat in that region, according to the general, is "high."

According to reports, Poland will send altogether 1,188 soldiers to join the NATO-led ISAF peace-keeping force in Afghanistan in the first half of 2007.
