French President Jacques Chirac has reaffirmed France's support for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, according to a statement issued by the French Presidential office on Monday.

During a working breakfast with the Egyptian President Hosni Moubarak who is currently on a visit to France, Chirac and Moubarak reviewed the latest developments concerning the Israeli- Palestinian issue, confirming that "France supports the Palestinian president and hopes that a quick solution to the problem could be found with the help of the populations.

The two leaders also discussed the situation in Iraq and efforts deployed to Iran so that it can respect all its obligations regarding the nuclear issue, underlining the necessity of convergence of efforts in the fight against terrorism, according to the statement.

Chirac hailed the Egyptian president's visit to France, describing it as an occasion to "pursue broad-based dialogue which France and Egypt have always advocated in the Middle East," says the statement.

Touching on Lebanon, Chirac described as "important and urgent, the establishment of an international tribunal, for reasons of justice and deterrent," in order to bring to justice the authors behind the assassination of former Lebanon Prime Minister Rafik Hariri in February 2005.
