On December, 15th, conference on the special check-and-acceptance of major science and technology projects was held by the Science and Technology Bureau of Zhejiang Province, and it was announced at the conference that China s first set of high pressure pump utilized to desalinate sea water had been successfully manufactured in Zhejiang.
Sea water desalination technology is most needed in Australia and Middle East, where there are vast desert areas. In China, Zhejiang Province demands the largest amount of desalinated sea water because almost all the islands of Zhoushan Islands, big or small, need this technology whenever water is used. It costs 5 yuan to desalinate just one ton of sea water and one of the contributing factors of this high cost is that high pressure pump, the core equipment of sea water desalination, could only be manufactured by Germany.
When the high pressure pump manufactured in China is put into market, its sale price is estimated to be lower than that of the German products by 40 percent, thus making large-scale sea water desalination possible in Zhejiang islands.
