Write: Mitcham [2011-05-20]

The result of the selection of 2010 Top Ten Scientific Progresses in China , organized by the Basic Research Management Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology, was released in Beijing. Qian qian, a researcher in China National Rice Research Institute (CNRRI) was invited to attend the ceremony and receive the award.

Qian qian s award-winning project is Revealing the Molecular Mechanism of Forming Rice Ideotype . Qian qian, together with Li Jiayang, an Academician in the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, formed a research team and successfully cloned a key gene IPA1 to help increase rice production for the first time in the world. The mutation of the gene can reduce the number of rice tillers, increase the number of grains and weight per 1000 seeds (the weight of one thousand seeds in grams) and at the same time make the stem thicker and stronger and improve its lodging resistance capability.
