No Protective Measures Needed against "Extremely Low Levels" of Radioactive Materials Detected on China s Southeastern Coastal Areas

On March 28, concerning the possible impact on China of the accident at Japan s Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, China's National Nuclear Emergency Coordination Committee issued the following authoritative statement.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) update, the situation of the accident at Japan s Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant has tended to be stabilized, with the radioactive levels continuing to decline in the vicinity. Since the detection of radioactive iodine-131 in the air of China's northeastern Heilongjiang Province, "extremely low levels" of radioactive materials have also been detected on China s southeastern coastal areas.

Experts believe that they have been dispersed by air from the radioactive materials released from the Japan s nuclear accident. The detected levels of radioactive materials were below one-hundred-thousandth of the natural background radiation, which poses no threat to environment and public health and hence calls for no protective measures.

Based on the monitoring and analysis results from the Beijing-based Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC Beijing) affiliated with the World Meteorological Organization and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the State Oceanic Administration and the Ministry of Environmental Protection National Nuclear Safety Administration , it is concluded that the accident at Japan's Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant hasn't had any impact on the environment and people's health in China thus far.
