"Sport Relief Mile" is a biennial charity event held in the U.K. on March 19-21; but this year, the British consulate in Guangzhou decided to bring this tradition to the city of flowers. Yesterday (March 21st) in Guangzhou, they organized a running event on Ersha Island, a haven of peace and tranquility hidden amidst the city.
It was the first time "Sport Relief Mile" was held in Guangzhou. The participants included members from the British Consulate General in Guangzhou, the British Council, British Tourism Authority, British Chamber of Commerce in Guangdong as well as students and teachers from Guangzhou Chi Lin School. All the money raised will go to build another training school for mentally disabled students graduating from Chi Lin School.
But why choose Ersha Island? Graham Nelson, British Consul Political and Economic said "the island is a very green and clean place at the foot of Haixin Tower and looking over onto the Guangzhou Opera House in Zhujiang New Town. These two landmarks are the product of cooperation between British and Chinese architects." He hopes more charity events could be held, bringing people together from across the globe.
