On Feb. 14th, in Jinli, Chengdu, using western music style, foreigners performed old Chengdu music, such as Qingyin (a kind of verse song), sound of fluffing cotton, Jinqianban (a kind of folk art), and Sichuan opera. As an major activity of Imagine Australia, the Year of Australia Culture in China , Australian band joined the Chengdu Temple Fair and performed Old Chengdu concert twice a day for Chengdu citizens. This is the debut of Old Chengdu concert in China after its tours in Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
Imagine Australia, the Year of Australia Culture is a cultural exchange activity between Australia and China with regional participation playing a key role. This Old Chengdu concert blends modern jazz music with Sichuan traditional music, percussion music, sounds of daily life to present an old but modern voice of a west Sichuan city.
The whole concert is played by trumpet player Peter, trombone player Adrian, bass player Rob, Sichuan Qingyin successor Tian Linping, Erhu player Zhou Yu, Sichuan opera percussion music drumer Zhong Kaizhi, flute player Shi Lei and other musicians with 38 kinds of Chinese and western musical instruments. In the one-hour performance, there are newly-revised traditional Qingyin songs Picking Chinese Flowering Crabapple and To the Flower Show, impromptu Erhu solo The Moon Over A Fountain, and jazz music People Fluff Cotton, Rhyme of Bicycle, Brick Over Brick and Di-Da-Kua.
