Mistress of former Chinese political advisor imprisoned for 3 years for bribery

The mistress of a former top political advisor in south China's Guangdong Province was sentenced to three years imprisonment Thursday for taking bribes.

Li Yong, 35, formerly a well-known anchorwoman on Guangdong television, also had 100,000 yuan (15,151.5 U.S. dollars) of property and a Land Rover confiscated, according to the sentence of the No. 1 Intermediate People's Court in Chongqing.

Li came met Chen Shaoji, the former vice Party chief of Guangdong and later the province's top political advisor, in 2003. She later became his mistress.

Li told Chen to buy a 4WD for her in 2008. Chen then asked a Hong Kong company board chairman surnamed Yang to buy the vehicle for Li.

Yang bought a Land Rover for Li and paid the related taxes and insurance for her, amounting to 1.36 million yuan.

Li was convicted of taking bribes, taking advantage of Chen's position and demanding a 4WD from others.

Chen, 65, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for taking bribes in July last year. Authorities also seized all of his assets.

Chen was accused of using his positions, including as former provincial police chief and chairman of the Guangdong provincial committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), to benefit others in the period 1992 to 2009 in return for nearly 30 million yuan.

Chen, his son Chen Ziyi and his mistress Li Yong accepted the bribes.
