According to the 16th Asian Games Organising Committee (GAGOC), the torch relay of 2010 Asiad will cover only the 21 cities on prefecture level in Guangdong Province so as to save operational cost. Dongguan is scheduled to be the third stop for the relay.

The cities included in the relay are Zhongshan, Zhuhai, Dongguan, Shenzhen, Huizhou, Shanwei, Shantou, Jieyang, Chaozhou, Meizhou, Heyuan, Shaoguan, Qingyuan, Zhaoqing, Yunfu, Maoming, Zhanjiang, Yangjiang, Jiangmen, Foshan and Guangzhou. The torch relay will conclude in Guangzhou with the lighting of the Asian Games cauldron during the Opening Ceremony on November 12.

The torch relay has been preliminarily set for this October. The torch-bearer selection program will be conducted from April to July. Details such as the date for the torch relay in Dongguan, the specific relay route through Dongguan, and how to select torch-bearers have not been released as of the moment. It is also unknown if there will be local torchbearers for the torch relay in Dongguan, according to an announcement made by GAGOC and the Dongguan Sports Bureau.

The weightlifting program for the 16th Asian Games is set to be held on November 13 through November 19 in Dongguan. To better co-host the weightlifting competition, Dongguan has spent 30 million yuan on the rebuilding work on the Dongguan Sports Center which was officially completed last November.
