Dongguan is to build a system of public earthquake shelters next year, an official from Dongguan Seismological Bureau said on Wednesday.

An official from Dongguan Seismological Bureau surnamed Zhang said the bureau s proposal for building some public earthquake shelters in Dongguan has been approved by the Municipal People s Congress of Dongguan this February. The Bureau will select the locations for the shelters this year, and the construction work is set to start next year.

According to the official, the shelters are set to meet the international standards for earthquake emergency shelters, with carefully plans on electricity, water, medical care and other facilities, and will be based on the population expectations of Dongguan from the year of 2012 to 2022.

Dongguan is on the southeast coastal seismic belt in China. On the afternoon of November 19 last year, a magnitude 2.8 earthquake occurred in Shenzhen, and affected some Pearl River Delta cities like Dongguan, Huizhou and Hong Kong. But no devastating earthquakes have ever happened to Dongguan so far.
