Recently, as the WHO International Healthy City Alliance Steering Committee confirmed, Tonghua County has officially become a WHO Western Pacific Healthy City Alliance member. This is the first county in China to join the Healthy City Alliance.

On the basis of winning the titles of national advanced clean county and national garden county, Tonghua County places more emphasis on expansion of urban connotation and makes full efforts to enhance its soft power for development. In 2009, after being included in the ranks of national civilized counties, it puts the building of a healthy city into the key agenda. After the new rural construction in recent years, health and activity squares, reading rooms and other entertainment venues have been built in all the 160 administrative villages throughout the county, and the villagers are often organized to carry out a variety of recreational activities. The organs take the lead in carrying out the smoke-free office activity; and all the cadres in the county s administration building do broadcast gymnastics at the front of the building at 15:30 everyday. In addition, the organs hold volleyball tournament and table tennis annually, and regularly hold popular games, so as to enhance the health awareness across the county.
