29th April, district mayor Yang Yi Wen met the 12-man delegation lead by Queens Borough President (New York City, USA), Helen M. Marshall during their visit to our district. District mayor Yang Yi Wen welcomed the Queens Borough President, Helen M. Marshall and gave her an introduction of Dongcheng District, its economic and social developments, and the status of its foreign affairs cooperation. She introduced the Wangfujing International Brand Festival to the visitors and welcomed their participation in this activity. Helen M. Marshall gave an introduction of the Borough of Queens and provided relevant information. Under a cordial and friendly atmosphere, both parties reached a consensus to strengthen communication and cooperation in the areas of education, culture, business, economy, etc. After the conference, district mayor Yang Yi Wen and Queens Borough President, Helen M. Marshall signed the Memorandum of Friendly Exchange between Dongcheng District and the Borough of Queens. Deputy district mayor Guo Huai Gang was also present at the conference.
The Borough of Queens is the largest in area of the five boroughs of New York City (Borough of Manhattan, Borough of Queens, Borough of Brooklyn, Borough of The Bronx and Borough of Staten Island) with a land area of 117 square miles (approximately 187 square kilometers). Known for its ethnic diversity, it has a population of 2,241,600 and is home to New York City s second largest Chinatown (in Flushing), the New York John Fitzgerald Kennedy International Airport and La Guardia Airport. It is also the official venue of the US Open Tennis Championships that is being held every year. The Borough of Queens is a city of education, culture, business, leisure and entertainment which is similar to Dongcheng District in many areas. For the first time, the signing of the Memorandum of Friendly Exchange is Dongcheng District s establishment of friendly relations with America, which will further expand Dongcheng District s channels of communication and to promote exchanges with foreign countries.
During the visit, the delegation was given a tour of the Administration Service Hall and Residents Center.
