Visit of President Yang Zhen and his delegation to New York Institute of Technology and New York University

Recently, President Yang Zhen with his delegation, three members in all, visited New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) and New York University (NYU).

The visit on invitation of our delegation was highly valued by NYIT. Accompanied by the authorities there, the delegation visited some related colleges and departments on both the Manhattan campus and the Long Island campus, and observed many teaching facilities such as laboratories and libraries. Edward Guiliano et al met with our delegation, and held several friendly talks on the extensive bilateral cooperation. President Yang Zhen and President Edward Guiliano respectively introduced the general situations and development targets of the two schools. They both expressed their satisfaction with the results in working together, and reached agreements, in view of former experiences, on many issues such as the broadening and deepening of the cooperation, the enlarging of the number of the students from the US, the training of the selected core members of the faculty, and the joint holding of international conferences.

During their visit in NYIT, President Yang and his group also interchanged with vice-presidents, including Mr. Pizer, deans of some departments, and part of the professors of Chinese origin there.

In NYU, President Yang Zhen and his fellows were showed around the Labs of Wireless Communication and Information Security etc., and meetings were held between the visitors and Prof. Jerry Hultin, the head of the branch of Polytechnic Institute of NYU, and Prof. Zhang Zhongjun, the former head. The talks were very businesslike, very precise, no rhetoric on either side., thus achieving consensuses on series of issues as academic cooperation and communication in relevant fields, the fostering of postgraduates, the exchanging of visiting scholars, and the training of teachers.

New York University, NYU for short, is one of the largest private universities all over the United States of America, where, up to the spring of 2008, there have been 31 winners of Nobel Prize, 9 of American National Medal of Science, 16 of Pulitzer Prize, and 19 winners of the Medal of National Academy of Sciences (ranking first among all the universities in USA). Polytechnic Institute of NYU, the private engineering college with a long history that ranked the second of its same kind, is among the top 50 famous institutes of science and technology in the whole country.

During his stay in NYIT and NYU, President Yang Zhen called on the students sent there from our university to participate in the joint training programs. Cordial conversations were held between the President and his students, and the inquiries about the conditions of study and life there showed Yang s loving care towards the young. Currently, there are nearly 100 students from NUPT who are studying in NYIT, and over 30 in NYU.
