Appraisal of Establishment of Key Laboratory (Class B) of Ministry of Education at NPU is Approved

The expert panel organized by the Department of Science and Technology under the Ministry of Education and headed by CAS Academician Yu Qifeng held its expert appraisal meeting in Xi'an on Nov. 16, 2010 to appraise the application by School of Electronics Engineering at NPU for the establishment of the key laboratory (Class B) of the Ministry of Education.

The appraisal meeting is chaired by Mr. He Lifang, director of Department of Science and Technology under the Ministry of Education. Dr. Yu Zhenfei from Department of Science and Technology under the MIIT is present at the meeting. Vice President Wei Bingbo attends the meeting and delivers his speech.

Professor Gao Xiaoguang, dean of School of Electronics Engineering which is applying for the key laboratory, reports on the six areas: background and necessity, research basis and level, research team and student education, operation and facility support, construction scale and new equipment, qualification status. After the meeting, the expert panel conducts a field trip to study the conditions where the key laboratory will be based; the laboratory researchers answered the questions raised by the experts.

The appraisal experts agree that: the laboratory is positioned closely around the future needs for the development of national defense science and technology and the aeronautical and astronautic information and weaponry. The laboratory has its clear research objectives, is focused and innovative and can provide significant theoretical support for the autonomous innovation of national defense weaponry and the raising of national defense industrial level.

During the recent five years, it has undertaken such important national defense projects as the 973 Project and the 863 Project and has many prominent research achievements, thus laying solid foundations for the research and further development. The research team is organized well, capable and good at educating students.

The existing special-purpose instrument and equipment are quite advanced and can ensure basic research and key technology tackling in the laboratory. The investment scale and new instrument and equipment are justifiable and can meet the needs of development.

Therefore, the expert panel approves the appraisal of the application for the key laboratory (Class B) of the Ministry of Education.
