Recently, a good news from the "National College Volunteer Student Serving the West Project" management office has been sent that SCUT Youth League Committee was entitled "Outstanding Project Office" of the above-mentioned project, making SCUT the only university winner of Guangdong Province. ZHANG Wei, a student from School of Business Administration, was awarded "National Outstanding Volunteer".
It is known that the "National College Volunteer Student Serving the West Project" is jointly organized by The Central Committee of the Communist Young League, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security, which recruits college graduates every year since 2003 to offer one or two years of voluntary services in poverty-stricken areas in the West, covering education, sanitation, agricultural techniques, poverty alleviation as well as construction and management of youth centers.

In the past five years, there are altogether 37 volunteers participating in the project. In 2006, the "1+3" West voluntary service project was initiated in SCUT. The project selects a certain amount of excellent graduates for the year to serve the West for one year. Upon the successful completion of the project, these students can further undertake the graduate program in SCUT excused from an entrance examination.

The project turns out to be well-received among the students. ZHANG Wei, one of the first volunteers, said: "I feel quite lucky that when I am young I have found a place where I am helpful and I can do whatever I want to do without any outside disturbance. The project has offered me such a chance to realize my dream.

"

SCUT turns out to be the first in the country implementing the "1+3" mode in the West volunteer service project, setting a good example in carrying out the "West Project" efficiently.
