SCUT students clinch 3 "Meritorious" awards in 2010 MCM/ICM

According to the result released on the official website of 2010 MCM/ICM, the 19 teams SCUT has sent to the competition, won 3 "Meritorious" awards, 8 "Honorable Mention" awards and 8 "Successful Participant" awards.

MCM and ICM stands for Mathematical Contest in Modeling and Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling respectively. It is an international mathematical modeling competition for undergraduates, sponsored by Mathematical Association of America, Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and National Security Agency.

MCM starts from 1985 and ICM from 2000. The contest has three undergraduates as a team; they should finish the model building, problem clarifying, testifying and research paper writing within 4 days. MCM/ICM has now become the most famous contest for undergraduate students, and is recognized as a grand gathering for international Mathematical Modeling circle.

The 2010 MCM/ICM was held from Feb 19 to 23, 2010. It has attracted 2,610 teams (2,254 MCM teams and 356 ICM teams) from 14 countries in 5 continents, including China and US. This time, SCUT assigned Prof. LIU Shenquan of School of Sciences as the head coach, and HONG Yi, CHENG Yongkuan, LIU Qing, DING Weijian and HUANG Ping as the advisors.

The participating students are from School of Sciences, School of Automation Science and Engineering, School of Computer Science and Engineering, School of Electronic and Information Engineering, School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering, School of Civil and Transportation Engineering and School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.

It is reported that MCM/ICM conferred 14 "Outstanding Winners" awards, 476 "Meritorious" awards, 662 "Honorable Mention" awards and 1426 "Successful Participant" awards this year.
