On the morning of April6, the appointment ceremony for chair Professor of Yat-sen Scholars set specifically for basic disciplines of mathematics, physics, chemistry, literature, history and philosophy took place on the South Campus.SYSU Academician Chen Xiaoming from the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Professor Sang Bing from the Department of History, and Professor Ju Shier from the Department of Philosophy, were appointed chair Professors of "Yat-sen Scholars". President Huang Daren, deputy secretary Li Ping, vice president Chen Chunsheng as well as the donor alumni Sha Liming attended the ceremony. The Ceremony was presided over by Vice-President Chen Chunshen.
At the ceremony, President Huang Daren signed a donation agreement with alumni Sha Liming and at the same time presented letters of appointment to Professor Chen Xiaoming, Sang Bing and Ju Shier respectively. Up to now, SYSU has appointed three batches, six Chair professors in total for "Yat-sen scholars". Previously appointed Professors are Professor Zhu Xiping, Professor Liu Xiaofeng and Professor Gan Yang.

The Aim of
Setting up Chair Professors for 'Yat-sen scholars' is to show the university s attention for the faculties engaged in basic research!

The appointment ceremony, deputy secretary Li Ping briefed on the basic situation of "Yat-sen Scholars" Chair Professors Project as well as the research area, academic achievement and postgraduate cultivation results of Professor Chen Xiaoming, Sang Bing, Ju Shier. Deputy Secretary Li Ping remarked that "Yat-sen Scholar" Chair Professor was established to reward, support and unite top talents in foundation course. It aims to provide a favorable environment for the development of foundation course in market economy. All of The three professors appointed are engaged in the basic disciplines and achieved outstanding academic results in their respective disciplines. President Huang Daren noted at the ceremony that the establishment of "Yat-sen Scholars" Chair Professor is to show the university s recognition of the scholars engaged in fundamental research. He pointed out that, , situated in the Pearl River Delta, SYSU benefits foremostly from the reform and opening up. Although the university has emphasized to construct and develop applied disciplines and further enhance the ability to serve for the local economic and social development, we should never forget the significance and competence of the foundation course of a university. President Huang Daren hoped that this ceremony would reiterate the weight and value of the foundation course for the academic development of the University and thus highlighting the university s adherence to the foundation courses. President Huang Daren spoke highly of the academic achievements of Chen Xiaoming Fellow, Professor Sang Bing, Professor Ju Shier, and deemed them as excellent role models for numerous scholars at SYSU who devote themselves to scholarship. As a philosophy of its schooling, SYSU s "Professor = University" is well manifested in these outstanding scholars. SYSU will no doubt become more famous owing to the academic achievements of its scholars.

Academician Chen Xiaoming, Professor Sang Bing and Professor Ju shier gave speeches in the ceremony, extending their aknoledgments for the supports and good atmosphere they received from SYSU, and the affirmation and supports from the alumni of SYSU.
Academician Chen Xiaoming claimed that being appointed as Yat-sen Scholar made him feel both inspired, and obliged. He Thanked SYSU and alumni, maintaining that he would work harder.
Professor Sang Bing considered the honor as a recognition of his work and said that, academic is a career of spiritual adventure, so is professional education career, , for education is career of monumental . The former academic fruits had become history, which could only prove the last. Therefore the only thing we can fo today is not a career of adventure. His humorous remarks brought a burst of laughter.
Professor Ju Shier also expressed his acknowledgemnt in the speech. He claimend thatSYSU has provided them with ample growing opportunities and that he is pleased to have work at SYSU, as he is happily engaged in the work he loves. He will work harder in his post as a responsible Yat-sen Scholar.
My parents gave me life, and SYSU educated me, so I have a strong feeling for SYSU.
Deputy-President Chen Chunsheng introduced the circumstance of the Sha Liming who is the alumni of SYSU and the contributor of the project. Sha liming graduated from the department of history in 1982, and after his graduation he started his own business and was very successful in in the management of industry, real estate, catering and mining . He has always been concerned about the development of SYSU and is very active in the activities of the alumni association. Mr. Chen mentioned in particular that Mr. Sha liming had also founded Yuezhong Fund in his high school (a first top tier high school in Zhaoqing) to encourage students who are admitted to SYSU from top tier high schools. Mr. Chen spoke highly of the act of kindness of Mr. Sha liming whom, with his wealth, makes contributions to society by supporting the education enterprise, Mr. Sha Liming recalled his memory of SYSU in the ceremony, and said that when he learned that he had been admitted to SYSU, he was very excited. Four years of learning and living at SYSU had taught him the truth of tenet , which had helped broaden his horizon and learned to be thankful . My parents gave my life, and SYSU had taught me, so I have a strong complex for SYSU , he said with lament, I am pleased to subsidize Yat-sen Scholar project , and thanked our school for giving me this opportunity to understand the significance of capital investment.
President Huang Daren praised and thanked Mr. Ma for his caring and support. Mr. Ma said that the quality of education of a university is not only measured by the index marks, but also by the social performance of the students. When a student graduates from university, his strong complex to his school shows the perish memory and experience at the school. I am very pleased with the strong complex, which is the confirmation for education and even for the school , president Huang Daren said.
Also present at the ceremony were Mr. Sha liming's wife and individuals in charge of the school Party Propaganda Department, Personnel Department, Alumni Association, Department of History, Philosophy, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, and other units.
Chen Xiaoming, Professor of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, and PhD supervisor, academician of Chinese Academy of Science. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the Department of Chemistry at Sun Yat-sen University in 1983, Master of Science in Chemistry from the same department in 1986, and PhD degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1992, and obtained a teaching post at Sun Yat-sen University. He was promoted to associate professor in Dec 1993, gained an exceptional promotion to professor in Dec 1994, and elected PhD supervisor in inorganic chemistry in July 1996. He was appointed Cheung Kong Scholars Program Professor by the Ministry of Education in 1999 and elected academician of Chinese Academy of Science in Dec 2009. formerly the dean of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, he is now the director of the Chinese Chemical Society, the Chinese Rare Earth Society, and the China Crystal Society, member of the editorial board of Inorganic Chemistry, Structural Chemistry, and Journal of Rare Earths. He is also the reviewer of several international academic journals, including Journal of the American Chemical Society, Inorganic Chemistry, Science China, Journal of Chemistry, Chinese Chemistry, Chinese Science Bulletin, and Higher Education Chemistry. He has been long devoted to the research of functional coordination compound chemistry and crystal engineering.
Sang Bing, Professor of the Department of History at Sun Yat-sen University, PhD supervisor, director of the Sun Yat-sen Research Institute, and the Contemporary China Research Center. He earned a B.A. degree from the Department of History at Sichuan University in 1980, M.A. degree from the Department of History at Sun Yat-sen University in 1983, and PhD degree from the History Institute at HuaZhong Normal University. He began teaching in the Department of History at Sun Yat-sen University in 1983, and was promoted to professor in 1992, and began supervising PhD students in 1994. Prof. Sang Bing is the first scholar to obtain the Guangdong-specially-appointed Professorship in 1999, and appointed as the first Cheung Kong Scholars Program Professor in humanities and social sciences at Sun Yat-sen University in 2004, and is the first Cheung Kong Scholars Program Professor in the field of history in China. Prof. Sang has been long engaged in the research of politics, society and culture in late Qing Dynasty, and knowledge and institutional transition in contemporary China, contemporary relations between China and Japan, and history and academic research since Qing Dynasty. He has made remarkable achievements in the research of contemporary and modern history, especially in the field of contemporary and modern culture history, intellectual history, and academic history.
Ju Shier, Professor of the Department of Philosophy at Sun Yat-sen University, PhD supervisor. He received his B.S. degree in mathematics with the specialty in mathematical logic in 1982, and M.A. degree in scientific philosophy from the Department of Philosophy at Sun Yat-sen University in 1987, and PhD degree from the Department of Philosophy at Wuhan University. He is appointed Guangdong Zhujiang Scholar Professor, and admitted into the Humanities and Social Science Talent Education Training Program sponsored by the Ministry of Education, and went to the Department of Philosophy at Columbia University for further study in logic. He is now the director of the Institute of Logic and Cognition at Sun Yat-sen University, which is the Humanities and Social Science Key Research Base of the Ministry of Education, member of scientific philosophy division of degree evaluation committee of the National Council, and member of social science committee of the Ministry of Education, reviewer of national social science funding grant evaluation committee, associate director of the Chinese Logic Association, associate director of the mathematics logic committee of Chinese Mathematics Association, chairman of Guangdong Logic Association. His research areas include non-classical logic, philosophical and cognitive basis of logic and cross-cultural exchange.
