President Xu Xianming Attended the 3rd Cross-Strait University Presidents'   Forum

From November 3rd to 12th, President Xu Xianming of SDU attended the 3rd Cross-Strait University Presidents Forum hosted by Chengchi University in Taiwan. After the Forum, President Xu visited some universities and organizations in Hong Kong and Taiwan, including Taiwan University, the University of Hong Kong, Tamkang University, and Feng Chia University.

From 4th to 5th, President Xu attended the Forum during which he led the panel discussion on the social responsibilities of universities and made a concluding speech. This Forum was attended by more than 40 Presidents and Vice-Presidents from mainland universities under the 985 Project and Taiwanese universities.

In the afternoon of 5th, Xu went to visit Taiwan University, and talked with Prof. Si-Chen Lee, the President of Taiwan University. The two talked about current cooperation, and exchanged ideas about the cooperation on summer workshops. During the visit, Xu also visited the School of Liberal Arts and the exhibition on the university s history.

On 6th, Xu was invited to attend celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Tamkang University. After that, Xu paid a visit to Feng Chia University, during which he attended presentations on green energy research and digital campus construction, two special programs of FCU.

During his visit to the universities in Taiwan, Xu met with SDU exchange students studying in the partner universities. He wished the students cherish the study opportunities and encouraged them to learn more about the society and local culture through their first-hand experiences.

During his visit in Taiwan, Xu met with Director Kong-xin Chou of the Palace Museum in Taipei, where he retrieved and read the documents critical to the founding of SDU: the original copy of the proposal to establish Shandong University signed with approval by Emperor Guangxu and the original copy of the university Charter upon its establishment. During the visit, Xu also met with people from various fields, including Yueh-Sheng Weng, the Former President of the Court of Judiciary; Jen-Ho Chiao, the Former Secretary-General of ARATS; Samuel Yin, the President of Ruentex Group; Chung-Ling Shao from the Chinese I-Ching Science and Culture Association, Taiwan; as well as Dr. Shu-fan I, the President of Li-Ching Cultural and Educational Foundation, to whom Xu presented the certificate of appointment as university board member as well as plaque of board membership.

On the 10th, Xu visited the University of Hong Kong. There he talked with Prof. Lap-Chee Tsui, the Vice-Chancellor, about cooperation between SDU and HKU. Xu expressed his gratitude for the support HKU had offered to SDU Overseas Experience Program. They also discussed to broaden the cooperation. Later, Xu met with Jao Tsung-I, a famous scholar in HKU, in Jao Tsung-I Academic Research Center. On 11th, Xu met with Peng Qinghua, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People s Government in the Hong Kong S.A.R.

During his stay in Hong Kong, Xu also met with public figures and entrepreneurs including Exco Convener Leung Chun-ying; Zang Jianhe, the President of General Mills; Chiang Chen, the President of the Chen Hsong Group; Rita Fan Hsu Lai-tai, the former President of the Legislative Council; Barry Cheung, Head of the Urban Renewal Authority; and representatives of Shandong Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong; as well as representatives of SDU Alumni Association. Xu presented the contract and badge of school board membership to Leung Chun-ying and Zang Jianhe.

On this trip, Xu was accompanied by Prof. Liu Dajun, a tenured professor at SDU and Director of the Center for Zhouyi & Ancient Chinese Philosophy; Prof. Tong Guangwu, Director of the International Office; and Prof. Jing Haiming, Deputy Director of the Department of Cooperation and Development.
