UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon Receives Honorary Doctorate at Nanjing University

UN  Secretary-General  Ban  Ki-moon  Receives  Honorary  Doctorate  at  Nanjing  University
Nanjing University (NJU) conferred an honorary doctorate degree upon United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the afternoon of October 31 in recognition of his contribution to international cooperation and world peace. The awarding ceremony was presided over by Prof. Zhang Rong, Executive Vice President of Nanjing University.
Prof. Hong Yinxing, Chancellor of Nanjing University, welcomed Mr. Ban Ki-moon into the big NJU family. He said in his welcome speech that Nanjing University has conferred Mr. Ban Ki-moon an honorary doctorate degree in full recognition of his outstanding talent and vast knowledge as well as his wisdom, courage and resolution in promoting international cooperation and exchange and safeguarding world peace over a long period of time.
Chancellor Hong Yinxing hoped that with Mr. Ban Ki-moon part of its family, Nanjing University would strengthen cooperation with the UN and make new contributions in terms of promoting educational and cultural exchanges, and world peace and development.
Prof. Wu Peiheng, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, announced the Decision on Conferring an Honorary Doctorate Degree of Law on Ban Ki-moon. Prof. Chen Jun, President of Nanjing University and Chairman of NJU Academic Degree Evaluation Committee, presented the certificate of honorary doctorate degree of law to Mr. Ban Ki-moon.
Dr. Ban Ki-moon delivered a speech on sustainable development and climate change.
He said that as the world`s second largest economy, China can and must lead the way on the path of sustainability.
"The world`s resource base can not support the consumption patterns seen in the industrialized nations. China must seek a different route," he said. "Let China be the country to show the way ahead."
He said that China is on the move, and is fighting climate change and environmental degradation. And the faculty and students of Nanjing University are part of this great move forward, who can help China to fully embrace its emerging role as a global leader in the twenty-first century.
UN Under-Secretary-Generals Vijay Nambiar and Lynn Pascoe, and Permanent Representative of China to the UN Ambassador Li Baodong also attended the ceremony.
Nanjing University has enjoyed long-standing ties with the United Nations. Three of the seven Chinese UN Under-Secretary-Generals were NJU graduates, including incumbent Mr. Sha Zukang. Currently Nanjing University and the United Nations keep close cooperation in many fields, such as Chinese language training, AIDS prevention and control, global climate change, ecological protection and environmental improvement.
