Car thefts

POLICE broke up 71 criminal rings involved in car thefts and seized 261 suspects in 2010. A total of 190 vehicles had been retrieved, police said yesterday.

Cab driver killed

A TAXI driver was killed when he lost control and hit the road fence at the intersection of Aiguo Road and Dongmen Road North on Friday. The vehicle was not seriously damaged but the driver Xu, a native of Jiangxi in his 30s, was thought to have broken his neck in the smash.

The incident is under investigation.

Expert committee

THE city s third science and technology expert committee, a Shenzhen government think tank, was established Friday. The committee comprises 36 well-known and influential experts including professors at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Short trip travel

THE short trip travel in Guangdong Province is becoming popular during the Qingming Festival on April 3-5. Most itineraries were for hot springs and flower blossoms, local travel agencies said.

Intercity trains

SHENZHEN Railway Station will add two intercity express trains to Meizhou and Shaoguan in April. The T8370 to Meizhou will leave at 8:30 a.m., arriving at Meizhou at 1:16 p.m. The T8372 will depart Shenzhen at 9:30 a.m. and arrive at Shaoguan at 1:47 p.m, according to the new schedule.

Illegal taxis

THE transport commission Friday seized 54 private cars allegedly being used as illegal taxis. The illegal taxis were found at railway stations, bus terminals and airports.

Fatal rest

A YOUNG man died after he was hit on the head by a falling lamp post in Pingshan New Zone on Thursday. Cheng Niu, 22, was taking a rest near an optical shop on Longqin Road with his parents when the lamp post was hit by a dump truck. Cheng died before he was taken to a nearby hospital. His parents suffered minor injuries, said a woman witness who drove Cheng and his parents to hospital after the accident. The truck driver has been detained for questioning.

Fire scare

MORE than 30 residents in a residential building in Bao an District were injured after the building caught fire Thursday. Chinese language media reports said that there was no fire escape or fire extinguisher in the building, posing a severe fire risk to residents. Shajing subdistrict government officials said they were investigating.
