CCAN Will Pay Close Attention to United Nations Climate Change Talks in Tianjin

The forthcoming session of United Nations Climate Change Talks will be held in Tianjin Meijiang Convention and ExhibitionCenter from October 4 to October 9, 2010. This session has attracted more and more international and domestic NGOs attention. At international level, the Global Campaign for Climate Action (GCCA) recruited a China National Coordinator to provide special support for Chinese NGOs participation in Tianjin session, Mr. Lo Sze Ping will act as the coordinator. At domestic level, CCAN has played an important role to provide support for CCAN members and observers participation.

On August 18, 2010, the second meeting on NGOs participation in the Tianjin session was held at CANGO s meeting room. 40 participants from NGOs and media joined the discussion. Mr. Lo Sze Ping, the China National Coordinator of GCCA acted as facilitator. Most CCAN members in Beijing joined the meeting, including China Association for NGO Cooperation, Friends of Nature, Dao Institute for Environment and Development, Shanshui Conservation Centre, China Youth Climate Action Network, etc., international NGOs including WWF, Greenpeace, NRDC, Heinrich Boell Foundation, Oxfam, Action Aid, etc., media including China Dialogue, China Newsweek, Southern Weekend, etc.

All participants had an effective discussion on the NGOs activities planned during the Tianjin session. Following ideas and suggestions were brought up: a.) renting an outside meeting place at Meijiang for NGOs to conduct training, salon, workshop, etc.; b.) GCCA coordinates with the UNFCCC secretariat to register an inside office to provide information and service to Chinese NGOs; c.) NGOs common voice, coordinated by a voluntary small draft group; d.) applying for a common booth to show Chinese NGOs work on climate change; e.) exchange activity between Chinese NGOs and Chinese as well as other countries governmental delegations; f.) joint NGO side event.

These activities have entered the countdown stage, all participants will further communicate by email to follow up the progress and further detail discussion will be held during the next meeting on September 8, 2010.
