The city will invest 100.2 billion yuan ($15.27 billion) on key projects to foster development in five wide-reaching areas this year, local government officials said Wednesday.

The funds support 84 projects in creative, environmental, construction and energy, social welfare and public infrastructure arenas at least 12 of which are slated to be completed by the end of this year.

The city's plans also include another 44 projects, which are in the early planning stages, as well as the launch of 20 new projects this year.

Key creative projects include the construction of a technology park, which will be run by the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Disneyland; Shanghai Wusongkou International Cruise Port;

Shanghai Center Tower, set to be the tallest skyscraper on the Chinese mainland by 2014; Shanghai Financial Transaction Square in Pudong New Area; and the International Shipping Service Center.

Better environmental management of Suzhou Creek and improved sewage treatment at plants across the city will also be a top priority, authorities said Wednesday.

In terms of the city's energy plans, natural gas projects and fire prevention systems will be a focus for officials this year.

The city will also work to build more subsidized housing, roads, transportation hubs, hospitals, schools, libraries and museums, officials said.

For the coming months, efforts will be focused on completing the city's 645-kilometer section of the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway route, which is expected to be up and running by June.
