An official investigative group from the Republic of Korea (ROK) arrived in Shanghai last night to start a weeklong probe into an alleged sex scandal involving three former ROK consuls, who reportedly leaked national secrets to a Chinese woman they had an affair with last year in Shanghai, ROK's Yonhap News Agency reported yesterday.

Comprising 10 government officials from the ROK's Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the team was debriefed by the ROK's Consulate General in Shanghai yesterday evening, the report said.

The investigation aims to seek answers to how the confidential information including 200 of the ROK's contacts was leaked. The team will also examine if any other foul play that has not been brought to the government's attention was committed.

The Shanghai investigation comes after the three ex-consuls involved were called back home to participate in an investigation that has been determined inconclusive due to varying accounts given by the men, an anonymous senior official with the ROK was quoted by Yonhap last weekend.
In addition to the probe, the official also said that his government will later this month launch a separate investigation into Kim Jeong Kee, the ROK's former head of general consulate in Shanghai

Kim is also suspected of engaging in an inappropriate relationship with the same Chinese woman.
