Mei Lan, the popular cub and offspring to the pair of pandas at Zoo Atlanta returned to China in her custom made FedEx Express 777 freighter affectionately known as the FedEx Panda Express on January 5th. She was accompanied by Tai Shan, the 4 and a half year old male born at the Smithsonian s National Zoo. The animals were also accompanied by trained vet staff, keepers, and a FedEx express worker on their journey. The FedEx provided two custom-built, climate controlled, plexiglass transport containers for Mei Lan and Tai Shan. The containers were large enough for the animals to pace and move about and also held 40 lbs of bamboo, water, and other supplements.

As time drew closer to her return, the staff at the Chengdu Panda Base made the necessary preparations.
A journalist came especially to visit Mei Lan s new enclosure. She will stay in quarantine initially, as is standard protocol with every new animal to the facility. The quarantine area is quiet and away from the main tourist area of the base which will help decrease stress for Mei Lan and help her adapt to her new home. If the weather is not good, she has access to two indoor enclosures as well as 2 outdoor enclosures for good days. Mr. Huang Xiangming, head of the animal management department, said that the base staff have asked Zoo Atlanta for some of her favorite foods to help her transition into her new home. She also has access to fresh bamboo and experienced to care for her.
