Pedestrian crossings to be sheltered

Pedestrian crossings to be sheltered

On June 11th, the ribbon cutting ceremony for the "Roadside sun shades" project took place under a large awning at the intersection of Bailong North Road and Wenming East Road. Since its installation, pedestrians waiting to cross the road at the traffic lights can avoid exposure to both sun and rain. It is expected that 147 such shades will be built in Haikou, which will become a highlight of Haikou's beautiful landscape.
Hainan province has the longest duration of sunshine nationwide and is one of the provinces with the highest annual average temperature which may reach up to 40 outdoors. According to the current traffic light setup, residents need to wait for 100 seconds in the pedestrian area. Related studies found that the tolerable limit for pedestrians waiting for a traffic light to change is 60 seconds. This is one of the reasons why some people cross the street even when the crossing light is red. The setup of these shades in pedestrian waiting areas will be beneficial in reducing pedestrian and non-motor vehicles crossing streets.
