Acting as a barometer for the overall economy, the volume of cargo handled by Haikou port reached 609,000 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) in 2010, an increase of 54% over the previous year's figure. This throughput now ranks Haikou as the number one port in the Beibu Gulf area.
Mr Chen She, General Manager of the Haikou Port Container Pier Co. Ltd said that investors are now pouring into Hainan after construction of Hainan International Tourism Island became part of the national strategy with large-scale projects spreading like wildfire across the island.
Imports of containerized steel, cement and other materials are rapidly increasing thereby driving forward the economic development of the province as well as spurring growth in the cargo handling and logistics sectors.
Mr. Huang Youguang, Vice President of Hainan Harbor and Shipping Holding Ltd predicts that the throughput of containerized cargo in 2011 will reach 800 thousand TEUs and breakthrough the one million mark in 2012.
