The Tea Horse Road is one of the oldest caravan routes in ancient Asia and connected Sichuan, Tibet and Yunnan. This caravan route provided not only goods but also a channel for communication between the Han and Tibetans. In 2010, the Tea Horse Road was declared a National Cultural Relic Protection Site.
Research of the route around Chengdu has already been handed in to the Sichuan Cultural Relics Administration and a series of projects designed to preserve the road will be implemented. It is also believed that protecting the route will also increase the living standards for local residences who live along the route.
