A high-speed rail link connecting Shanghai and Hong Kong is expected to be finished and put into operation within three to four years, Chen Weili, deputy director of Shanghai Hongqiao Business Hub Management Committee, told the Hong Kong Commercial Daily yesterday.
The journey will only take three and half hours, whereas the current intercity rail line, from Hong Kong`s Kowloon to Shanghai, takes nearly 19 hours.
The soon-to-open Shanghai-Hangzhou route will be the first part of the 1,300-kilometer-long Shanghai-Hong Kong high-speed rail link.
The rest of the track will run to Shenzhen, a city in southern China, and then carry on to Hong Kong.
There is one high-speed rail link already under construction to Hong Kong - the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong route in south China.
