MOST new events planned for this year`s Shanghai Tourism Festival will be held in the city`s outskirts to prevent traffic congestions in the downtown areas.
The festival, running from September 12 to October 6, will overlap with the World Expo and bring more visitors to the city, said the Shanghai Tourism Administration, the festival organizer.
Each year, the festival attracts about 8 million tourists from both home and abroad.
New events planned for this year include a float parade along Suzhou Creek, a fishing competition in Pudong, a music festival in Baoshan, and a magic festival in Songjiang, all away from the city center, Zhang said.
International magicians and rock bands have been invited to amuse tourists, whose number has soared beyond expectations since the World Expo began in the city.
Many of the city`s sightseeing spots, such as the Bund and Yuyuan Garden area, are packed every night as visitors tour the Expo during the day and explore the city at night.
