THE International Congress and Convention Association recently released its 2009 annual report on the international association meetings market and related statistics. According to the ICCA report, in 2009, 58 international association meetings took place in Shanghai, ranking Shanghai in the top 28th position worldwide, the same as in 2008.
The Year of 2009 indeed marked a year of steady and orderly development for the Shanghai`s events industry in that it has successfully tackled the financial crisis, whilst seeking to forge ahead and make headways through overcoming stumbling blocks.
In the area of promoting convention tourism, Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration canvassed and lent active support for "Shanghai`s Convention Ambassadors" who were encouraged to give full play to their influence in their respective spheres, professions and organizations, resulting in quite a number of influential international association conferences being held in Shanghai. As an example, in 2009, the "21st International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Congress", "13th Asia Pacific Pediatric Nursing Conference" and "The 13th General Assembly of the International Association of Urology (SIU)" all brought more than 1000 delegates worldwide each to their respective association meetings.
The successful hosting of those mega meetings greatly enhanced Shanghai`s events tourism potential, showcasing to the international community Shanghai`s appeal, capacity and resources as a fully fledged convention tourism destination.
