Yangtze River Delta Outbound Tourism Market Report Released in Shanghai

IN 2009, 858,643 people in Shanghai joined organized outbound tours, up by 16.31% over the previous year, representing a net increase of 122,300 people. Among the total number of outbound visitors, 639,030 traveled abroad, an increase of 14.92%, representing a net increase of 84,800 people. At the 2010 Outbound Tourism Forum held today, the Yangtze River Delta Outbound Tourism Market Report was released. The Report shows that in 2009, the whole nation`s outbound tourism grew by 3.95%, Shanghai`s outbound tourism returned a rapid growth rate of 16.31%, arousing much interest among the Forum participants.
The Report shows that the trend of the outbound travel seasons in 2009 was W-shaped, characterized by two low troughs and 3 high peaks. The Chinese New Year in 2009 fell in the month January, which saw the first peak of the outbound travel, March-April formed the second small peak, followed by the yearly low trough period of the months of May, June and July, from August to the end of the Year presented a third peak in outbound travel which also happened to be China`s longest nationwide peak for outbound travel.
Statistics reveal, in Shanghai`s organized outbound travel in 2009, the direction of the flow, relatively speaking, concentrated mostly in various places in Asia, about 469,300 people, which accounted for 73.44% of the total outbound flow; this was followed by Europe with 64,100 people, accounting for 10.03%; in third place was Oceania, with 53,600 people, accounting for 8.39%; the number of people who went to Africa and the Americas in 2009 was 1 million. The top ten destinations for outbound tourists from Shanghai in 2009 were in the following order: Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, South Korea, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, France, Cambodia and Italy, among which Japan was the only destination which exceeded 100,000 visitors from mainland China, totaling 120,000.
