SHANGHAI is planting a 4,000-square-meter forest in Xuhui District in which Expo visitors can buy trees to compensate for the carbon dioxide produced on their way here, local environment authorities said yesterday.
The forest is 98.9 kilometers long and about 500 meters wide along the city`s Outer Ring Road.
It will connect the Minhang Sports Park, Binjiang Forest Park in Pudong and Gucun Park in Baoshan District to form a green belt around the city. It will open to the public in March.
Expo visitors can check their carbon emissions with an online calculator at www.cleanair.net.cn, which will convert the carbon amount into the number of trees needed to compensate. A version in English, and six other languages, will start soon.
The CO2 released during a journey from Beijing to Shanghai will be compensated by planting about two trees. The price of the trees has yet to be set.
The Expo organizer is talking with the Shanghai Environment and Energy Exchange to establish a payment system for visitors to pay for the carbon emissions online, said Qian Feng, chief operating officer of the exchange.
