Metro expansion target set at 800km

SHANGHAI will have a Metro network stretching 570 kilometers by the end of 2012, with a long-term target of 800km in total, Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng told local legislators yesterday.
Shanghai now has 425km of Metro lines in service, serving about 5.4 million passengers a day on average, with peaks reaching 7.5 million. The city will improve the management systems of one of the largest Metro networks in the world to maintain high safety standards. This will be done by recruiting about 1,600 people to increase the current Metro police force of 400, setting up 15 Metro police stations along the network and asking the 6,000-plus security guards who served during the Expo to continue in their duties.
As for the problem of funding the network`s further development, a fund will be set up, and a certain percentage of cash from the city`s and districts` land transactions would be used to support construction, development and expansion of the network.
