Kizil Grottos / Kizil Thousand-Buddha Caves

Located in the precipices of the north bank of Muzhati River in Baicheng County, the Kizil Grotto is one of the four largest Buddha grottoes in China, which was built in the late 3rd century. The Kizil Thousand-Buddha Caves take an outstanding position in the art of Central Asia and the Eastern Countries. There are 236 grottoes left in the attractions, more than 70 of which still have remaining murals.

With a whole length of two kilometers, the attraction is divided into four areas: West-Valley Area, Inside the Valley, East-Valley Area and Rear-hill Area. The Tianxiang Painting, Tian Gong Ji Yue and Ji Yue Le Ren are quite famous. The Thousand-Buddha mural painting with the Mahayana style appeared in the murals in the late period. Portraits of human beings in the grottoes are plenty, depicting the custom and life of Junci Ancient Country, which is a precious material to study the life of Junci society.
