Located in the busy Barkhor Street to the west of Jokhang Temple and also close to the magnificent Potala Palace, the Tibetan Traditional Hospital was established in 1916. Once named Mentsekhang in Tibetan, in the beginning it was a regional government teaching organization where Tibetan doctors and astronomers were trained. Afterwards in 1959, the local government merged Mentsekhang with another medical college, which was formerly situated on Chakpori Hill near the hospital. Thus, the Tibetan Traditional Hospital and the associated Tibetan medicine factory were founded.
The hospital is the biggest traditional Tibetan medicine production center in China. There are two production lines that support 62 projects. With advanced medical facilities and over 160 staff and technicians, the hospital was the first factory to substitute manual production techniques with modern mechanical means. Furthermore, the hospital is able to produce 250 different kinds of medicines.
The walls in the hospital are covered with thangka paintings, through which knowledge about traditional medicine is imparted and developed. While in the hospital, visitors can try to understand the mysticism of Tibetan traditional medicine more deeply.
