Linggu Temple, originally called Jiangshan Temple, is located 1.5 km from the east of Dr. Sun Yat-sen s Mausoleum. It was built in 514 during the Southern Dynasty as a burial site of the famous monk, Baozhi. Since the Ming Dynasty, Nanjing was designated as capital, with the western half of Purple Mountain chosen to house the imperial mausoleum ---- Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum. As a result, the temple was moved to the present site by the first emperor of Ming Dynasty, and bestowed the new name Linggu. In the years after, the temple was destroyed in war and was rebuilt in peacetime.
The buildings in Linggu Temple include Beamless Hall (Wuliang Hall), Linggu Pagoda, Depository of Buddhist Sutra and Memorial Hall of Xuanzang. Beamless Hall was built in 1831, 22mtall, and and area of 53.8m x 37.9m. The hall was made of only bricks, thus the name Beamless Hall. In 1928, the national government refurbished the memorial hall to commemorate sacrificed soldiers in the Northern Expedition War. In lieu of this purpose, the Linggu Pagoda was originally called the Memorial Pagoda of Sacrificed Soldiers .
