The Yarlung Zangbo River Grand Canyon (Yarlung Zangbu Da Xiagu, Yarlung Zangbo Gorge) is considered the most mysterious place in the 'roof" above the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. And for its unique geotectonic position, it is extolled as "the Key to Open the History of the Earth" by the scientists.
The canyon originates from Mount Kailash and running east for about 1700 km drains a northern section of the Himalayas before its enters the gorge near Pe, Tibet. The canyon has a length of about 150 miles as the gorge bends around Mount Namcha Barwa (7756 m) and cuts its way through the eastern Himalayan range. Its waters drop from 3,000 m near Pe to about 300 m at the end of the gorge. After this passage the river enters Arunachal Pradesh, India, and eventually becomes the Brahmaputra. The whole canyon is dangerous, remote and quiet.

Four giant waterfall groups are found in the canyon.
The environment of the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon is rugged, where glacier, cliffs, abrupt slops, and roar torrents are mixing. Sometimes, mud-rock flow may occasionally occur.
Travel Tips to Lhasa Yarlung Zangbo River Grand Canyon in Tibet
There are six lines to visit the canyon in Tibet. If you start from Lhasa, I suggest you take bus to Bayi Town, Zhilin then to Pailong, and then trek to Zhaqu, where you can see the grand bend of the Yarlung Zangbo River and the deepest Grand Canyon. When on the way back to Pailong, you can passingly visit the Menba People's villages, and view the boundless primitive forest. When return Pailong, you can go on transfer to Milin and then to Gacha. The natural landscape of this canyon section is super and fantastic.
