Global warming culture has arrived.
A motocross event through local forests and city streets and a fashion "summit" are among the myriad side events scheduled
for the United Nations' Climate Change Conference 2009, which begins Monday. There's also a new Copenhagen cocktail for delegates perhaps weary of heavy discussion.
The International Eco-Enduro is the "world's first international Enduro race for zero-pollution
electrical competition motorcycles," say organizers, who add, "No CO2 and no noise." The events include two days of racing around the wooded countryside south of Copenhagen, followed by a big finale in the center of the city later this week.
The chic and stylish also will have their say.
"The Fashion Summit will include events and happenings with the purpose of illustrating and suggesting possible solutions to the environmental, social and ethical challenges that the fashion industry faces," say the organizers of the event, scheduled for Thursday.
While delegates to the United Nations event talk over global warming and the Kyoto Protocols, other groups have garnered their own piece of the action, including the following events gleaned from the official "COP15" calendar:
"Gendered Development" (Women for Climate Justice), "Climate Refugee Camp" (Danish Church Aid), "A Universal Declaration of Mother Earth Rights" (Bolivia), "Zoos and Biological Consequences of Climate Change"(Aalborg Zoo), "Meat the Truth" (a documentary film), Children's Action Event (Children's Climate Forum), "Play to Stop Climate Change" (Backstreet Boys).
Climate change has its share of glamour, too. There is an official cocktail in the mix, meant to compete with the New York City's Manhattan or the Singapore Sling and heavily promoted in the city's restaurants and watering holes.
The Copenhagen is a little pick-me-up for the global warming gaggle that grew out of a contest among Denmark's top mixologists and was officially sanctioned by the Danish tourism board. One Gromit Eduardsen concocted the winning formula:
5 cl Bols Genever (almost 2 shots)
2 cl Cherry Heering liqueur (equivalent to about ¾ shot)
2 cl fresh lime juice
2 cl sugar syrup
1 dash Angostura Bitters
