European Commission’s proposal of extending anti-dumping duties on Vietnamese leather shoes has been opposed by the European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam, as these duties would adversely affect country’s economy, which had already been impacted by global economic crisis, said Mr. Alain Cany, Chairman EC while addressing media.
In October 2006, Vietnamese leather shoes were subject to anti-dumping duties for 24 months. A review was conducted in this year in which it was revealed that the country continued to dump leather-capped shoes and a proposal to extend the duties for more 15 months was put forth.
To take a final call on the proposal, envoys from 27 European countries are in talks and if this proposal is accepted, the punitive tax will be effective from the month of January. In this respect, Mr. Cany said that the EU should keep on supporting Vietnam regarding the investment decisions and also respect bilateral trade commitments.
The Chairman would try to convince the commission that there is no need to extend 10 percent anti-dumping tax on Vietnamese shoes for another 15 months. Politicians and businesses persons in Vietnam as well as in other countries too have protested the EU proposal.=
